Residents of Omagba (Phase I), Onitsha, were on Sunday evening thrown into pandemonium when two fillings stations were reportedly caught up in an explosion which injured several persons and resulted in gridlock along major roads.

About 15 vehicles, a mechanic workshop and some nearby buildings were also affected by the fire outbreak.

The explosion which happened very close to the Zik Mausoleum and Conference Centre, impeded the free flow of vehicles along Awka Road, the Onitsha-Enugu Expressway and Old Road in Nkpor, Anambra State.

It led to a stampede causing more people to sustain varying degrees of injuries.

The affected filling stations – Christen Filling Station along Awka Road and another station situated along Onitsha-Enugu Expressway, were said to have exploded around 7:30 p.m, yesterday.

Officials of the Anambra Fire Service stormed the scene and were able to prevent nearby Rain Oil Filling Station and another owned by J.I Ejison Oil And Gas, from also being caught up in the fire.
