National grid restores to 2,793.20MWs from 90MWs, after 9th system collapse in 2022

Following the national grid collapse which occurred at about 10:30 am on Monday, being the 9th in the series of collapses recorded in 2022, the Transmission Company of Nigeria(TCN) as of 5 am, on Tuesday, September, 27,2022, transmitted a total of 2,493MWs into the distribution network, after receiving a total of 2,793.20 MegaWatts(MWs) of electricity from the Generation companies(GenCos).

 

DISCOs

At the period of filling this report on Tuesday,  the eleven(11) electricity distribution companies (DISCOs) shared a total of 2,493.00MW of electricity, as Ikeja Disco received  380MWs, being the highest load allocation, followed by Abuja DisCo and Ibadan Disco and Enugu that received 361MWs, 324MWs, and 257MWs respectively.
Yola Disco received 77MWs being the lowest energy allocated for the period under review.
The allocations to other DisCos were EKO DisCo (251MW), Jos DisCo (100MWs), Enugu DisCo (300MW), Kano DisCo (150MWs), Port Harcourt DisCo (194MWs), Kaduna DisCo(179MWs) and Benin DisCo (220MW).
The recovery was confirmed in different statements released by most of the DisCos on Tuesday.GENCOs

EnergyDay gathered that Nigeria’s largest power plant, Egbin Power with 1,050MW capacity was the biggest supplier with  443.00MWs, followed by Azura-Edo IPP(Gas) with 417MWs.Other active generating plants as Kainji Hydro 407MWs, Jebba(hydro) 340MWs, Alaoji NIPP(gas) 105MWs, Delta(Gas) 253MWs, Odukpani NIPP(Gas) 309.5MWs,  Olorunsogo(gas) 71.30MWs, Omotosho(gas) 65.90MWs.

Others are Omotosho NIPP(Gas) 108.10MWs, Rivers IPP(gas) 120MWs, Trans-Amadi(Gas) 61.60MWs, Afam IV&V(Gas) 52MWs, Dadinkowa  G.S(Hydro).
Geregu(Gas) and Afam VI (Gas/steam) were completely out.

TCN EXPLAINS

The Transmission Company of Nigeria, TCN, in a statement on the backdrop of the grid collapse, attributed the nationwide outage to the sudden drop in system frequency, which it claimed created system instability.Ndidi Mbah, General Manager, TCN Public Affairs, in a statement obtained by EnergyDay said, “The restoration of the affected part of the grid commenced immediately at 11.55am with Osogbo/Ihovbor back to the grid followed by Jebba/Osogbo, Kainji/Jebba, Benin/Onisha, Shiroro/Kaduna, Shiroro/Katampe, and Alaoji/Ikot-Ekpene. Others are Lokoja/Gwagwalada, Odukpani/Ikot Ekpene, Benin/Omotosho, Oke-Aro/Ikeja west, Egbin/Oke-Aro and Kaduna/Kano.

She noted that the National Control Centre (NCC) has commenced a full-scale investigation to establish and ascertain the cause of the partial disturbance, noting that the unwholesome event has resulted in aggregated generation loss.

She further revealed that grid restoration is almost completed and the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI) regrets any inconveniences caused as well as appreciates the kind understanding of customers of electricity within and outside the country.
