2023 Tree Planting Day: Egbin plants over 200 trees in 1 year, offsets carbon emissions, promotes environmental sustainability

As part of its commitment to environmental sustainability, the management of Egbin Power Plc, the largest power generating station in Nigeria, said it has planted over 200 trees within its facility in Ijede/Egbin, Ikorodu, Lagos in one year, with the aim of offsetting its carbon emissions as well as capturing and storing emission from its plant.
Mokhtar Bounour, Chief Executive Officer, made this known in his remark on the occasion of the 2023 Tree Planting Day activities held at Egbin Power Plc, on Friday.
According to him, Egbin Power Plc is joining the Lagos State Government to commemorate this year’s Tree Planting Day, having realised the derivable benefits of trees to environmental sustainability and biodiversity.
The management of Egbin power plant puts a lot of effort into making sure the environment is safe, clean, and sustainable for everyone.
He said, “As part of our tree plant initiative this year, we have planted over 200 trees within our facility including the football field to further strengthen our collective goal.
“The trees provide cover for sports lovers while watching their favourite team play on the field.
“Planting of trees is one of the approaches used to “protect, restore and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, and halt and reverse land degradation and halt biodiversity loss, in line with Goal 15 of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
“We are particularly deliberate about all our actions towards the environment by promoting sustainability, work-life balance, and the well-being of employees.
“Our sustainability roadmap is well-defined, and this translates to an action plan that creates an enabling environment for our employees to offer their best at all times.,” the CEO said.
Bounour further stated that the commitment to planting trees is a win-win for people and the planet. It is a simple and effective way to improve our lives and protect our environment.
He said, “Therefore, as we work towards bringing energy to life in a responsible way, we remain committed to our stakeholders, thinking globally and acting locally, in order to keep providing electricity that drives socio-economic development.”
Bounour also commended the Lagos State Government in commemorating this year’s Tree Planting Day while noting that trees play important roles in the ecosystem such as providing food crops, offering shade, preserving biodiversity, beautifying and purifying the environment, amidst other derivable benefits.
“What we give to the environment is what the environment gives back to us. That is why at Egbin Power Plc, we are conscious about the impact of our activities on the environment; hence we are committed to caring for our environment,” GenCo said.
EnergyDay gathered that carbon footprint of the Egbin thermal plant has been measured and effort is being made by the electricity generating company to reduce carbon emissions from the plant for environmental sustainability.
Further revelation showed that the Tree Planting Day is organized yearly by the Lagos State Parks and Garden Agency (LASPARK). The 2023 activity was held under the theme: ‘Let’s Green Our City.’
