Power generation drops by 676MW, as NGC 3-day pipeline maintenance disrupts supply from Egbin

Nigeria Gas Company (NGC) has embarked on a 3-day maintenance on a pipeline supplying gas to Egbin Power Station, leading to the shutdown of the power station and a reduction of 676MW of bulk power generated into the nation’s grid from Tuesday to Thursday.

 

This was disclosed in a statement signed by management of TCN and obtained by EnergyDay on Tuesday.

 

EnergyDay gatherd that Egbin Power Station which contributes over 16% of the total electricity generated to the national grid will be shut down for three days, leading to power outages being witnessed in Lagos and some parts of the country.

 

TCN in the statement said, “This is to notify the public that as at 11:13 hours of 18th December 2023, Egbin Power generating station was shut down to allow the Nigeria Gas Company (NGC) to maintain linking gas pipeline supplying gas to Egbin Power Station. 

 

 

“The station will be shut down for 3 days from today. This means a reduction of 676MW of bulk power generated into the nation’s grid for 3 days and consequently the quantum of bulk power available to be delivered to distribution companies load centres nationwide for the period,” the notice stated.
EnergyDay check showed that following the announcement by TCN, supply from the generation companies dropped from 4,768.40MW around 7a.m on Tuesday to 3,562.54MW by 12a.m on Wednesday morning.
As 3,295MW is shared between the 11 electricity distribution companies, as at the period of filing this report.
